With partner, Bill Middlebrooks,
I recently completed the first full non-fiction book and I am incredibly
proud of this project. Here’s how it came to be:
One spring day in 2011, Bill Middlebrooks, founder and managing
partner of Excellence in Action, Inc. and past president of 100
Black Men of Detroit, approached me about working with him on a
book focusing on life lessons from African American fathers. I thought
it was a timely, much-needed project and I jumped at the chance
to breathe life into such an important familial and social issue.
Through the personal stories of twenty extraordinary men and women,
we explored and provided in-depth discourse on the substantive issues
related to fatherhood in the African American community. The purpose
of the book is to recognize and honor the wisdom and teachings
of African American fathers passed down to both sons and
daughters who took those lessons to heart and have led extraordinary
lives.
As we all know, a father’s presence or his absence is the one thing
in life that profoundly impacts who we become, the decisions we
make and the way we view the world. Often our relationships with
our fathers set the stage for the careers we choose, the relationships
we develop and the lessons we pass on to our own children.
Bill developed the concept for the book, so this is his baby. I
am Bill’s “hired gun” and together we make a kick ass team! He and
I both identified the extraordinary men and women featured in the
book. I conducted the interviews and Bill participated and provided
insight as we talked with each subject. We believe the book, which
will be available Father’s Day Weekend 2013, is poignant and thoughtful.
